My name is Joel Cohen -- a lot
of you know me or know of me. I have been doing Real World Restaurant Marketing
and sales building for over 25 years. You may have already been

Over the years, I've become known
as the honest restaurant marketer, applying common sense techniques
along with a no-nonsense approach. My personality says that when
I see many restaurants entering into programs sold to them by
vendors that over-promise and under-deliver, and when I see restaurants

facts, I get a tad upset. For me, and to maintain the integrity
and professionalism of the restaurant industry, it is important

The History of Marketing With Databases
Started Here!
- I have been doing restaurant
marketing for over 25 years now. Some of you reading this are
my corporate restaurant clients, some are my Journal of Restaurant
Marketing subscribers and some of you may be one of the thousands
who have seen me and heard me at various workshops across the
USA and Canada.
- About 30 years ago, I was one
of the first restaurant marketers to develop database marketing
programs for restaurants. It was totally unheard of back then.
- Finally, there was a degree
of acceptance as database "relationship marketing"
gurus and their companies started popping up all over the place,
claiming to be database marketing experts and having the "golden
formula" for a successful restaurant mailing programs. The
problem was these companies all eventually folded. They never
understood the restaurant business.
- Later, restaurants climbed on
the frequency reward club concept. I predicted these reward clubs
would fail for a number of reasons -- and in fact 99.7% of those
restaurants that did implement these reward programs, saw them
fail and their investment lost. The ones that incorporated my
system, using my "surprise and wow your customer concept,"
laughed all the way to the bank. The ones that continued to play
the reward game are desperately trying to get out of it, without
making their customers angry.
- And now, we're approaching the
present where email is the most important and powerful application
of the Internet. I started email marketing with restaurants about
12 years ago, when it was unheard of and AOL and Prodigy were
the first Internet companies on the scene. Now, there are zillions
of email companies asking for your business to handle your restaurant
email marketing program. Do they understand your restaurant business
